1919
In 1919, a group of municipal and provincial authorities founded the "Société Mutuelle des Administrations Publiques" (SMAP) for the insurance against fire, lightning and explosions.
1957
In the wake of the new law on compulsory civil liability insurance the introduction of compulsory motor third-party liability insurance, SMAP, which until then only insured local authorities, opens its doors to public service employees.
1984
SMAP sets up its Flanders headquarters in Hasselt.
1991
SMAP sets up headquarters in Eupen for the German-speaking region.
2000
On January 1st 2000, Smap accepts everyone as clients.
2003
SMAP changes its name to Ethias
2019
Ethias celebrates its first centenary!
